Our Role

The commission makes planning and development decisions according to land use bylaws for the Peggy's Cove Preservation Area and helps to preserve the unique scenic beauty, character and integrity of Peggy's Cove. The individuals who make up the commission are experienced leaders of this unique area, and will strike a balance between preserving our heritage and creating a welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.

Our Purpose

Our purpose as provided under the Peggy’s Cove Commission Act is to preserve the unique scenic beauty, character and atmosphere of the Area for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors for property within the Peggy’s Cove Preservation area.  This is primarily achieved through administering the Land Use Bylaws for the preservation area.

Peggy's Cove Commission Act

Peggy's Cove has been declared a preservation area to protect its rugged beauty. The Peggy's Cove Commission Act, passed in 1962, prohibits development in and around the surrounding village and restricts development within Peggy's Cove. The area is comprised about 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) stretching from Indian Harbour to West Dover and includes barrens, bogs, inland ponds, and rocky coastline. Visit website to learn more.

Peggy's Cove Land Use Bylaw

The Peggy's Cove Land Use Bylaw divides the village of Peggy's Cove into land use districts and establishes procedures for processing and deciding upon development applications. It regulates the use and development of both land and buildings within the municipality, in order to ensure orderly, efficient development.

Governance

Peggy’s Cove Commission Governance Document outlines the internal processes, procedures and rules that guide the conduct and activities of the Commission.
